Sola Fide means “By Faith Alone” and is what is taught by Scripture for Salvation, that it is not by works or any form of maintenance of one’s faith, not by works of righteousness but by Faith Alone!
And Sola Scriptura means “The Scripture of God Alone”, and this means for belief and practice we only follow what the Lord has explicitly decreed in His Holy Word, and that all other ideologies, opinions, and teachings are rejected or reproved by the Word of God.
However every other religion in the world teaches a form of works to maintain or gain God’s salvation and favor, and one of my favorite arguments against other religions is this –
Every single religion in the world, every single construct of belief in the entire world, is a “Works Based System“. With exception to True Faith Based (Sola Fide) Christianity.
Other than True Christianity of the Bible where Salvation by Christ is by faith alone, every other religion teaches works saves you or some form of “maintenance to keep your salvation” when the Word of God itself teaches “Not by works of righteousness which we have done” and “Our righteousnesses are as filthy rags before God“.
So with that, what does that tell you about other ways of belief? If God says “not by works” but nearly every religion in the world says “yes by works” except for only 1 belief system, who then is right and who is wrong?
Some say that’d be interesting if true, because nowhere in the Bible does it actual say the phrase “Saved by faith alone”, and that is basically the extent of their argument. However, Christianity is not only faith-based. Indeed the only verse in the Bible with the phrase “faith alone” in it says “man is justified by works and not by faith alone.“
I’m sorry but those arguing that have either not read their Bible, or they have refused to believe what they have read. The Word of God is very clear that it indeed we are saved by FAITH ALONE
- Romans 5:1) “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
- *Ephesians 2:8-9) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast”
- Romans 3:28) “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
- *Galatians 2:16) “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”
Other than True Christianity of the Bible where Salvation by Christ is by faith alone, every other religion teaches works save you or they teach of some form of “maintenance to keep your salvation“
Some have even argued against me and accused me saying –
That’s not “True Christianity of the Bible.” That it is only your particular Christian sect’s interpretation of various Bible passages ripped out of their context while ignoring the historical Christian church’s thoughts on the matter.
However true Christianity is “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved” that it’s “Not by works of righteousness which we have done” but is rather “A gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast“.
I’m sorry, but Church tradition does not trump Christ given Biblical Doctrine of Salvation, rather the Church and it’s traditions should be reproved and corrected if it strays from this message. And no I am not ripping anything out of context, in fact I would love for anyone to show me how the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not by faith alone by using the Holy Scriptures alone, and not some church ideology, pope decree, or scholarly council’s opinions.
Then they argue that passage about “our works are as filthy rags” is regarding to apostate Israel’s false illusion of good works. They were pretending to be good on the outside when inside they were full of evil works. They’re saying that I’m ripping that phrase out of context, and then pretending that all good works are filthy is a huge mistake.
The context of James 2 is showing how before God man’s feeble attempts to earn Salvation by our own means before God are seen by God as filthy rags. That before an infinitely Holy, Pure, and Just God we cannot merit His favour by our works, because our attempts are so limited and are only the “Imagined pure works of a sinfully corrupted mind“.
- Titus 3:5-7) “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
Salvation is granted by Christ through Faith in Believing on Christ as our Lord and Saviour, and not by working for it. Otherwise it is a pride based works system that is denounced by Scriptures as a false teaching.
Good works and charity are always taught AFTER one is saved as a guideline of living and holiness to pursue Christ-likeness and a “striving towards the mastery of the high calling of God” and not as a means of religiosity in maintaining one’s salvation.
They always use James chapter 2 to try to justify the teaching of works because it says “Faith without works is dead” but they misunderstand and twisting the meaning.
Infinite Love drove Him to die for us so that we would not have to, giving us the free gift of Salvation through believing and accepting His work. His work on the Cross, being buried, and rising again and not our own works.
Not by works, nothing of ourselves. False teaching of works to maintain or gain salvation makes the person a god so to speak, because you are saying that your works are good enough to gain favor with God, and thus you are as powerful as God to earn your place in Heaven. Every single religion in the World other than true Faith Based Christianity is a works based system of salvation, teaching the people that Christ’s death on the Cross was not good enough and that we must do additional works and keeping of commandments. This is nothing short of taking Christ off the Cross and putting ourselves upon it, it’s sapping the Love of God and infusing our pride and religiosity.
From the beginning of time this was the false teaching of the Devil “Ye shall be as gods”, and a system of belief that takes away Christ and gives power to the people for attaining salvation is believing the lie that we can be as gods. Only 1 God paid the way, only 1 God has the power, only 1 God so Loved the world, and by our Lord Jesus Christ we have salvation through repentance of sins and acceptance of Him as our Saviour. For without Him, or trying to include the works of religion, we will sadly see another side of God that is fearful and that is His wrath that will be given to all who disregard His True message of “In Faith Believing“.
Again the context of James chapter 2 is to the Christians to teach them the appearance of living the Faith through Christ-likeness for the reason –
- 1 Peter 3:14-16) “But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.”
Again it’s about perception and showing to the world who we are, not religious maintenance of our own Salvation.
By Faith Alone, Not By Works. Christ saves those that believe of the heart, not the Pharisee that tries to earn it. Scripture is very very clear about this, and works to the Believer is for charity and good behaviour, not for as a means of righteousness because we have the righteousness of Christ as our Salvation, not our works. Works does not save you, but it does save your conscience, and it purifies your walk with God as James 2 points out. Your Soul is saved by Christ through Faith Believing, and holy and pure works saves your flesh through holy living and Christ-likeness though not as a matter of meriting favor or maintaining salvation but by our seeking to exemplify Christ by our desire and willingness to imitate Christ.
James chapter 2 (the works issue) explained by –
- Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary
James 2:14-26) – “Those are wrong who put a mere notional belief of the gospel for the whole of evangelical religion, as many now do. No doubt, true faith alone, whereby men have part in Christ’s righteousness, atonement, and grace, saves their souls; but it produces holy fruits, and is shown to be real by its effect on their works; while mere assent to any form of doctrine, or mere historical belief of any facts, wholly differs from this saving faith. A bare profession may gain the good opinion of pious people; and it may procure, in some cases, worldly good things; but what profit will it be, for any to gain the whole world, and to lose their souls? Can this faith save him? All things should be accounted profitable or unprofitable to us, as they tend to forward or hinder the salvation of our souls. This place of Scripture plainly shows that an opinion, or assent to the gospel, without works, is not faith. There is no way to show we really believe in Christ, but by being diligent in good works, from gospel motives, and for gospel purposes. Men may boast to others, and be conceited of that which they really have not. There is not only to be assent in faith, but consent; not only an assent to the truth of the word, but a consent to take Christ. True believing is not an act of the understanding only, but a work of the whole heart. That a justifying faith cannot be without works, is shown from two examples, Abraham and Rahab. Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness. Faith, producing such works, advanced him to peculiar favours. We see then, ver. 24, how that by works a man is justified, not by a bare opinion or profession, or believing without obeying; but by having such faith as produces good works. And to have to deny his own reason, affections, and interests, is an action fit to try a believer. Observe here, the wonderful power of faith in changing sinners. Rahab’s conduct proved her faith to be living, or having power; it showed that she believed with her heart, not merely by an assent of the understanding. Let us then take heed, for the best works, without faith, are dead; they want root and principle. By faith anything we do is really good; as done in obedience to God, and aiming at his acceptance: the root is as though it were dead, when there is no fruit. Faith is the root, good works are the fruits; and we must see to it that we have both. This is the grace of God wherein we stand, and we should stand to it. There is no middle state. Every one must either live as God’s friend, or God’s enemy. Living to God, as it is the consequence of faith, which justifies and will save, obliges us to do nothing against him, but every thing for him and to him.”
Old traditions and religious rituals are taking place of the Truth of the Scriptures of God, they say they are pointing to Apostolic traditions, and they say that our understanding of the Bible is twisting passages out of context.
The problem is, their “Jesus” is one that needs the assistance of works to merit Salvation if they are claiming that works are needed to save. Christ Jesus Himself said –
- John 8:24) “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”
Scripture clearly and blatantly describes Faith Alone Saves and it is not by works of righteousness, and the followers of other religions and other Gospels are saying “NO it is by works“. I’m sorry but “Let God be true and every man a liar” God’s word is clear and their interpretation is twisted and wrong and is clinging to the lie of the Devil that “you can be as gods” in that they believe you can save yourself by your own hands and works and charity.
If you do not repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as the Holy Scriptures lays out you will die in your sins unsaved. This is what the Word of God says and what the Apostles taught.
The true Apostolic traditions are –
- Acts 2:37-38) “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
- Acts 16:29-32) “Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.”
The True Apostolic traditions are plainly taught in the Word of God, but they cannot abide this sound doctrine, they want a manifestation of their own hands. They want something to do themselves, and why? Because of Pride of heart, lust of the flesh, lust for godlike power to gain their own favor their own way by their own hands. And this is the lie of the Devil which was since the beginning. Any belief that does not preach Christ and His Gospel by Faith Alone is a false Gospel which is accursed by God.
- 2 Corinthians 4:3-5) “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.“
And woe to those preachers of false doctrines and false gospels, they are in danger of the curse of God –
- Galatians 1:8-9) “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
With that then we are only left with 2 options of belief, and not a world full of different paths, there are only 2. The first is by believing in Christ by faith and repentance of sins, and the other is by self promotion and pride in an attempt to set yourself on the Throne of God like the devil tried to do in the beginning. Works begets pride and spiritual conceitedness and self sufficiency. Faith begets humility and dependence on Christ alone for all things.
Therefore, die to self, give up and trust the Grace of God and the Work of the Cross of Christ. Believe the Word of God as it has been given and do not follow after those teachings of Pride and self salvation.
Sola Fide & Sola Scriptura is to be our mandate and nothing else.
